Estimating on Number Lines to 10,000,000

Year 6 MathsPlace Value5 pages

About this worksheet

Number line practice for Year 6 with numbers up to 10,000,000, over four pages and an answer page. Pupils read arrows on four scales of 20 equal intervals, two from 0 to 10,000,000 and two across a single million. On blank lines they mark 6,250,000, 3,500,000, 4,750,000 and 8,200,000, then estimate where 7,300,000 sits and explain why. After that come 42 short questions on midpoints, steps along the line, rounding and digit values. The key gives every answer and each arrow's position as a percentage of the line. It follows England National Curriculum number and place value.

Pages 1 and 2 place numbers on scales to 10,000,000, and Questions 34 to 36 ask for the value of one digit.

Number - number and place value

โ€œRound any whole number to a required degree of accuracyโ€

What's inside this worksheet

Read the number lines

Four scales with 20 intervals each. Arrows point to values such as 2,350,000 on a line from 2,000,000 to 3,000,000.

Mark numbers on unlabelled lines

Four blank lines. Pupils label the ends, add their own interval marks and place each given number.

Estimate a position and explain

A line marked only at 0, 5,000,000 and 10,000,000 for placing 7,300,000, with four lines to explain the estimate.

Practise Midpoints and Intervals

Questions 1 to 15: midpoints such as 8,200,000 and 8,400,000, and divisions like 10,000,000 รท 4.

Practise Stepping Along the Line and Rounding

Questions 16 to 30, from 3,000,000 + 250,000 to rounding 4,049,999 to the nearest 100,000.

Beat the Clock: Precision Challenge

Twelve mixed items, including the value of the 4 in 9,148,000 and one quarter of the way from 0 to 4,000,000.

Answers

All 42 answers, plus the value and position of every arrow on pages 1 to 3.

How teachers use it

Board warm-up

Show line C and ask what one small step is worth before anyone reads the arrow. Once pupils see it is 50,000, the arrow is easy.

Compare explanations

Collect a few answers to the 7,300,000 task. Put a pupil who halved the gap after 5,000,000 next to one who counted in millions.

Timed starter

Use Questions 31 to 42 as a quick starter on another day. They mix midpoints, rounding and digit value in one short set.
