Dissolving and Solutions Cloze

Year 5 ScienceProperties and Changes of Materials3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 5 cloze on dissolving and how to get a solid back out of a solution. The passage follows sugar stirred into warm water, sets it against sand and chalk, and ends with evaporating the water to leave crystals. Pupils fill twelve gaps from a fourteen-word bank, where melt and irreversible are the spare words. Two questions follow: why dissolving is reversible but baking bread is not, and how to separate water, sand and salt. The answer key gives the gaps in order and a two-step method. It covers one England National Curriculum objective on materials.

Curriculum objectives covered

Properties and changes of materials

โ€œKnow that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution, and describe how to recover a substance from a solutionโ€

The first two paragraphs cover forming a solution, and the third paragraph and question 2 describe recovering salt by evaporation.

What's inside this worksheet

Dissolving and Solutions: Mixing and Separating Materials

A fourteen-word bank, including solute, solvent, soluble, insoluble and transparent.

How Substances Dissolve

Three paragraphs with twelve gaps, on a sugar solution, sand that can be filtered out, and crystals left after evaporation.

Applying Your Knowledge

A picture of salty water in an evaporating basin, then two questions on reversible change and separating a mixture of water, sand and salt.

How teachers use it

Before the practical

Do the cloze the lesson before you filter sand and evaporate salt water, so pupils already know the words.

Spare words

Ask pupils why melt is the wrong word for sugar in water, as many will say sugar melts in tea.

Method writing

Use question 2 as the plan for a real separation, then let pupils check it against what happened.
