Place Value Support Sheet: Numbers to 100,000

Year 5 MathsPlace Value3 pages

About this worksheet

This support sheet keeps Year 5 place value below 100,000, for pupils who are not ready for six-digit numbers yet. Each section opens with a worked example built on 23,142. Pupils name the value of an underlined digit in 15 numbers, recombine and complete partitions, then compare pairs and count on or back in powers of 10. Two last questions turn number words into figures. A one-page answer key covers all 42 questions, and the sheet works towards the Year 5 place value statements in the England National Curriculum.

What's inside this worksheet

Warm Up: Value of the Digit

Pupils write the value of the underlined digit in 15 five-digit numbers, from the 4 in 34,215 to the 1 in 46,815. A counter chart shows the first two numbers as dots in each column.

Level Up: Partitioning 5-Digit Numbers

Six sums such as 40,000 + 5,000 + 300 + 20 + 1 for pupils to recombine into one number.

Level Up: Questions 7 to 15

Nine partitions with one part missing, such as 52,418 = 50,000 + ___ + 400 + 18 and ___ + 1,000 + 400 + 90 + 2 = 71,492.

Beat the Clock: Compare and Count On

Six pairs to compare, including 19,999 and 20,001. Then come 1,000 more, 10,000 less and 100 more questions, and two number names to write in figures.

How teachers use it

Before six-digit numbers

Give it to the group who found four-digit numbers hard last year. If they finish the Warm Up quickly, they can join the class at 1,000,000.

Counters on the table

Put out place value counters and have pupils build 34,215 and 51,430 from the chart on page 1 before they answer questions 1 and 2.

Watch question 6

19,999 and 20,001 catch anyone who compares from the right. Ask pupils to read both numbers aloud before they choose a sign.
