Place Value Homework with Answers

Year 5 MathsPlace Value6 pages

About this worksheet

Four pages of Year 5 place value homework with numbers up to 1,000,000, followed by a two-page answer key. A worked example at the top partitions 340,852 on a place value grid and writes it in words, so parents can see the method. Pupils then work through digit values, a counter chart, number words, sequences in powers of 10, a rounding table and a thermometer reading from Aviemore. A challenge question about rounding to 500,000 ends the sheet. It covers the England National Curriculum place value statements for Year 5, apart from Roman numerals.

Worked Example

A place value grid shows 340,852, the value of its 4 and the number in words.

Section 1: Digit Values and Reading Numbers

Pupils give the value of underlined digits in numbers such as 472,109 and 924,057. They read 506,241 from a counter chart, write 280,406 and 713,090 in words and turn two number names back into figures.

Section 2: Counting Forwards and Backwards in Powers of 10

Four sequences to continue, from +10,000 starting at 164,500 to -100,000 starting at 925,180. The +1,000 row crosses 400,000.

Section 3: Rounding to 10,000 and 100,000

A table of four numbers to round both ways, including 94,760, then a tick-two question about a stadium crowd of 240,000.

Section 4: Negative Numbers and Reasoning

Pupils read -4ยฐC from a thermometer, add a 9 degree rise and find the drop to -7ยฐC. Amir's challenge asks for a 6-digit number that rounds to 500,000 both ways.

Answers

Every answer, with the completed tables and the full range of numbers that fit the challenge.

How teachers use it

End-of-unit homework

Send it home after the place value unit. The worked example on page 1 shows parents the method, so you do not need a covering letter.

Talk about question 16

Pupils give different numbers for Amir's challenge. Pair them up the next morning to check each other's, and ask why 495,000 works but 494,999 does not.

Hold back the key

Print pages 1 to 4 for pupils and keep pages 5 and 6 for marking. If parents mark it at home, send the key in a separate envelope.
