Percentages Support Sheet: Hundred Squares

Year 5 MathsFractions, Decimals and Percentages3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 5 sheet on per cent as parts of a hundred, with 45 short questions over two pages and the answers on the third. Pupils start by turning fractions over 100 into percentages, from 25/100 to 100/100, including 7/100 and 3/100. Next they move between percentages, fractions and decimals, as in 65% = ?/100 and 0.06 = ?%. The last part is about 100% as the whole: 100% minus 35%, 45% + ? = 100%, and three questions on the unshaded part of a hundred square, which is described in words rather than drawn. It follows the England National Curriculum objective on the per cent symbol.

Curriculum objectives covered

Number - fractions (including decimals and percentages)

โ€œRecognise the per cent symbol (%) and understand that per cent relates to 'number of parts per hundred', and write percentages as a fraction with denominator 100, and as a decimalโ€

Number - fractions (including decimals and percentages)

โ€œRead and write decimal numbers as fractions [for example, 0.71 = 71/100]โ€

What's inside this worksheet

Warm Up: Parts of 100

Fifteen fractions with a denominator of 100 for pupils to write as percentages, including 12/100, 68/100 and 3/100.

Level Up: Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Fifteen conversions in both directions. Pupils write 40% over 100, 35% as 0.35, 0.4 as 40% and 61/100 as a decimal.

Beat the Clock: Complements to 100%

Pupils subtract from 100%, find missing parts such as 92% + ? = 100%, and work out the unshaded part when 37 squares, 29/100 or 0.48 of a hundred square is shaded.

Answers

All 45 answers in section order. Question 19 accepts 0.2 or 0.20.

How teachers use it

Bring a hundred square

There are no grids on the sheet, so hand out a blank hundred square for the Warm Up. Shading 7 squares for 7/100 makes the link to 7% easy to see.

Tenths or hundredths

Questions 25 to 28 catch a common slip. A pupil who writes 0.4 as 4% or 4% as 0.4 needs tenths and hundredths on a place value chart again.

Before the expected sheets

Use it ahead of the expected-level percentage sheets. Pupils who finish Beat the Clock quickly and accurately are ready to move on.
