Year 5 EnglishReading Comprehension15 pages

About this worksheet

A 20-mark reading test for Year 5 in the style of the KS2 paper, built on two linked texts. The Beekeeper's Secret follows eleven-year-old Leo through a gap in Grandad Arthur's orchard wall to five hidden hives. Guardians of the Garden is non-fiction on queens, workers and drones, the waggle dance and the beekeeper's smoker, with a labelled hive diagram. Twelve questions each carry a content domain code from 2a to 2h. A four-page mark scheme lists acceptable answers and gives a rubric for the 3-mark comparison. The test follows England National Curriculum reading comprehension.

What's inside this worksheet

Text 1: The Beekeeper's Secret

A story of about 400 words. Leo finds a smoker that is still warm and a notebook in his grandad's handwriting, then hears the orchard gate.

Questions on Text 1

Pupils say what surrendering suggests about the wall, copy one word that shows the elder tree is old, number five events in order and predict how Grandad Arthur will react.

Text 2: Guardians of the Garden

Non-fiction on the honeybee colony. A diagram labels the roof, honey super, queen excluder, brood box and entrance slot.

Questions on Text 2 and Both Texts

A matching table for queen, worker and drone, a tick-box on why the writer mentions a twelfth of a teaspoon of honey, and a 3-mark comparison of how both writers present bees.

Mark scheme

Answers for every question, the marks per content domain, and a 0 to 3 mark rubric with a model comparison.

How teachers use it

End-of-term check

Give it under test conditions in 30 minutes. The domain codes beside each question show whether lost marks came from retrieval (2b) or inference (2d).

Mark the long answer together

After the test, read the 3-mark model for Question 12 aloud. Pupils then find one point they missed, such as the bees that queued patiently.

Over two lessons

Do Text 1 and Questions 1 to 6 one day and Text 2 the next. Question 11 then asks pupils to link the smoker Leo finds to the apiarist's tools.
