Reading Comprehension Support Sheet: Kayak Adventure

Year 5 EnglishReading Comprehension6 pages

About this worksheet

A support sheet for Year 5 pupils who are reading below the expected standard. The story, Caught by the Tide, follows Sam and his older cousin Maya as a current pulls their kayak away from a sea cave. Four multiple-choice questions check details such as the time Maya says the tide turns. Pupils then match current, drifted and reluctant to three meanings. Two inference questions and a final Yes or No judgement on Maya each come with a sentence starter. Model answers are on the last page. It follows England National Curriculum reading comprehension.

What's inside this worksheet

Caught by the Tide

A seven-paragraph story in short, plain sentences, with current, drifted and reluctant in bold.

Retrieve

Four tick-one questions, such as where Sam sat in the kayak and which animals the cousins saw near the rocks.

Vocabulary

A table that shows each bold word in its sentence from the story. Pupils write the letter of the matching meaning.

Infer

How Sam felt as the kayak was pulled out, and why Maya frowned at her watch. Each has a starter that ends with 'the text says'.

Respond and Evaluate

Pupils tick Yes or No on whether Maya was a good person to have in the kayak, then explain with a starter.

Answers

The ticked options, the letters C, A and B for the word match, and model answers that quote the story.

How teachers use it

Small-group reading

Read the story aloud with the group first. The bold words are easier to match once pupils have heard them in context.

Find it first

Before question 6, ask pupils to put a finger on the line about Sam's hands going cold. Then they copy it into the starter.

Same skill, shorter text

Give it to pupils who find the class passage too long. They practise the same inference questions with a starter for every written answer.
