Mains or Battery? Appliance Sort

Year 4 ScienceElectricity3 pages

About this worksheet

Sixteen everyday items for Year 4 to sort by how they are powered, on one page with a three-column table. The word bank runs from a kettle and a washing machine to a torch, a digital watch, a bicycle and a book. Page 2 asks which items were hardest to place, with a hint about recharging, and has pupils add a new item of their own to each column. The answer page accepts a mobile phone and a laptop as mains or battery, and notes that some smoke alarms are wired to the mains. It covers the first Year 4 electricity statement in the England National Curriculum.

What's inside this worksheet

Word bank and sort

Sixteen items and a table headed Mains Electricity, Battery Powered and Does Not Use Electricity.

Think Deeper

Question 2 asks which items were trickiest to place and why. Question 3 is a small table for one new item in each category.

Answers

The sorted table, a teacher note on phones, laptops and smoke alarms, and sample new items such as a microwave, a hearing aid and a skateboard.

How teachers use it

Real objects

Bring in a torch, a calculator and a phone charger. Pupils sort more confidently when they can look for a plug or a battery cover.

Argue the phone

Give pairs two minutes to decide where the mobile phone goes. The key accepts either column, so the reason is what you are marking.

Kitchen survey

Set question 3 as homework. Pupils find one item for each column in their own kitchen and bring the list in.
