Complete the Circuit: Support Sheet

Year 4 ScienceElectricity2 pages

About this worksheet

A one-page support sheet on complete circuits for Year 4, with an answer page. Six large circuit pictures each ask "Will the bulb light?" Five have one fault: a gap in a wire, no cell, an open switch, a wire that stops short of the bulb, and two wires on the same end of the cell. Picture 6 works. Pupils circle the fault, tick Yes or No and draw the fix on the picture. A word bank gives cell, wire, bulb and switch. It covers the England National Curriculum Year 4 statements on complete loops and switches.

Curriculum objectives covered

Electricity

โ€œidentify whether or not a lamp will light in a simple series circuit, based on whether or not the lamp is part of a complete loop with a batteryโ€

Pictures 1, 2, 4 and 5 break the loop in four different ways, and picture 6 is the complete loop.

Electricity

โ€œrecognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuitโ€

Picture 3 has an open switch, and pupils draw the blade closed to fix it.

What's inside this worksheet

Word bank and hint

Four part names and a reminder that a bulb needs a complete loop with a cell.

Six circuit pictures

Each picture has Yes and No boxes. Pupils mark the fault, draw the repair and leave picture 6 as it is.

Answers

The fault and the fix for each circuit, and a marking note on which drawn repairs to accept.

How teachers use it

Before the practical

Use it the lesson before pupils build circuits. Children who spot the gap in picture 1 on paper find loose clips faster with real kit.

Talk partners

Ask pairs to agree on Yes or No before anyone draws. Picture 5, with both wires on the plus end of the cell, starts the best arguments.

Test the answer

Set up picture 4 on a table with real wires and a bulb. Pupils who said Yes can see it fail, then make the fix themselves.
