About this worksheet

This Year 4 history comprehension follows Osgar, a ten-year-old boy in an Anglo-Saxon village. The passage covers his wattle and daub house, the hearth with no chimney, his father ploughing with oxen and the mead hall where a scop sings. Ten questions follow in three sections: retrieval, vocabulary and inference, and evaluation. They range from naming the three materials in daub to judging the hardest part of winter. The worksheet runs to seven pages, and the passage starts on page 2. The answer key gives model answers for all ten. It follows the England National Curriculum for Britain's settlement by Anglo-Saxons and Scots.

Section 3: Evaluation & Personal Response

How teachers use it

Guided reading

Read the passage as a group, then split Sections 1 and 2 across two sessions. Section 3 works as a written task on day three.

Question 1 wording

Question 1 says Osgar's family built the village. Tell pupils it means why the village stood near the river, so the wording does not trip them up.

Early finishers

Pupils who finish can draw Osgar's house with the hearth, smoke hole and shutters labelled from the text.
