Year 3 ScienceRocks2 pages

About this worksheet

A labelling diagram for the Year 3 rocks unit. A cross-section picture shows five layers of soil, each with a label line. Pupils choose from a word bank of five: bedrock, topsoil, parent rock, leaf litter and subsoil. The answer key gives the order from A to E: leaf litter, topsoil, subsoil, parent rock and bedrock. It links to the England National Curriculum objective that soils are made from rocks and organic matter.

Partly met. The layers run from leaf litter down to rock, which shows both parts of soil. The sheet does not ask pupils to say this in words.

What's inside this worksheet

Layers of Soil

A soil cross-section with label lines A to E and a five-word bank. Pupils write each layer on the line that points to it.

How teachers use it

Dig a hole

Take a trowel to a flower bed and compare the top layer with the leaf litter and topsoil in the picture.

Soil in a jar

Shake soil and water in a jar and let it settle. Pupils compare the layers in the jar with the five on the sheet.

Add a sentence

After labelling, ask pupils to write which layers come from rock and which come from dead plants.
