Shadow Length Investigation Guided Notes

Year 3 ScienceLight3 pages

About this worksheet

Year 3 pupils fill in these guided notes during a lesson on shadows. The three pages have four numbered sections, with fourteen gaps and three written notes. Pupils learn that light travels in straight lines and is blocked by an object, then match opaque, transparent and translucent to what each does with light. Two diagrams show a torch and a wooden bear, with a bigger shadow when the torch is close. The last section plans a fair test that changes the distance and measures shadow height in centimetres. The key gives every word and a model note. It follows the England National Curriculum for light.

Curriculum objectives covered

Light

โ€œFind patterns in the way that the size of shadows change.โ€

Section 3 and the pattern box at the end of Section 4 ask how shadow size changes as the torch moves.

Light

โ€œRecognise that shadows are formed when the light from a light source is blocked by an opaque objectโ€

Section 1 explains how an object stops light, and Section 2 names opaque materials as the ones that make dark shadows.

What's inside this worksheet

1. How Shadows Form

Three gaps on straight lines and light sources, a note on why a shadow is dark, and a diagram of a torch, a toy block and its shadow on a wall.

2. Materials and Light

Four gaps for opaque, transparent and translucent, ending with wood, cardboard and metal as opaque.

3. Changing the Size of a Shadow

A two-row diagram of a torch near and far from a wooden bear, three gaps on shadow size, and a note on shadows when the Sun is high or low.

4. Our Fair Test Investigation

Four gaps on what to change, measure and keep the same, then a box for the pattern between distance and shadow size.

How teachers use it

Torch practical

Darken the room and let groups measure a toy's shadow at three distances before they fill the pattern box.

Playground shadows

Chalk round a pupil's shadow mid-morning and again after lunch, then go back to the Sun question in Section 3.

Test the materials

Hand out tracing paper, clear plastic and card for Section 2, so pupils test each word before they write it.
