Light KWL Chart

Year 3 ScienceLight3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 3 lesson starter for a light unit, including an answer page. Part 1 is a KWL chart. Pupils fill the first two columns now and leave the third until the end of the unit. Part 2 has four quick-fire questions. Pupils pick the three light sources from six items and fill three gaps about light. They also choose a safe way to protect their eyes from the Sun and decide if a mirror gives out light. The key lists sample K and W answers. It is aligned to the England National Curriculum for science.

Curriculum objectives covered

Light

โ€œFind patterns in the way that the size of shadows change.โ€

No question tests shadow size. The key suggests "Why do shadows change size?" as a W column question, so pupils may raise it.

Light

โ€œNotice that light is reflected from surfacesโ€

Question 4 asks if a mirror gives out light, and question 1 includes a mirror and a polished spoon as items that only reflect it.

Light

โ€œRecognise that light from the sun can be dangerous and that there are ways to protect their eyesโ€

Question 3 asks for the safest way to protect eyes, with sunglasses and a sun hat as the answer.

Light

โ€œRecognise that shadows are formed when the light from a light source is blocked by an opaque objectโ€

Gap c in question 2 says a shadow forms when light is blocked by an opaque object, next to a picture of a torch and a toy block.

Light

โ€œRecognise that they need light in order to see things and that dark is the absence of lightโ€

Gaps a and b in question 2 cover needing light to see and dark as the absence of light.

What's inside this worksheet

Part 1: Light KWL Chart

Three columns: What I already know, What I want to know and What I have learnt. The last one is marked for later.

Part 2: Quick-Fire Starter Questions

Six items to sort, including the Moon and a polished spoon. Then gaps for light, absence and blocked, a sun safety choice and a true or false question on mirrors.

How teachers use it

First lesson

Give pupils five minutes on the K and W columns before you teach anything. Their questions tell you where to start.

Light sources sort

Bring in a torch, a mirror and a spoon. Turn the classroom lights off and ask which ones still shine.

Last lesson

Hand back the same sheet so pupils fill the L column, then check which W questions they can now answer.
