About this worksheet

A Year 3 history reading comprehension on the River Nile, for the Ancient Egypt depth study in the England National Curriculum. The text, The River of Life, runs to four paragraphs. It covers the flood season Akhet from July to October, the black silt left behind, the shaduf, papyrus reeds and boats on the river. It also quotes Herodotus calling Egypt "the gift of the Nile". Nine questions follow in three sections. They move from finding facts, to inference and word meaning, to a final question asking whether Egypt could have existed without the river. The answer key gives model answers for the longer questions.

Life on the River Nile

The four-paragraph text and a picture of a farmer lifting water with a shaduf beside papyrus reeds.

Section 1: Retrieval Practice

Questions 1 to 5: the flood months, the name Akhet, silt from four options, two papyrus products to tick (sandals and paper sheets), and three true or false statements.

Section 2: Inference and Vocabulary

Pupils find the word fertile, explain why farmers still needed a shaduf after the flood, and say why boats were easier than roads, with evidence.

Section 3: Evaluate and Respond

Question 9 asks if pupils agree with Herodotus, using two reasons from the text.

How teachers use it

Guided reading

Read paragraph two together and stop at fertile. Question 6 is easier once pupils have heard it in context.

Debate

Split the class for question 9. Pupils who agree must find two reasons in the text, and the rest must try to argue against them.

Map link
