About this worksheet

Adverbs for Year 3, over three pages. A box says an adverb tells you how, when or where something happens. Pupils underline the adverb and circle the verb in ten sentences, from The tortoise moved slowly to He coloured the picture neatly. Page 2 sends them back to those sentences to sort the adverbs by how, when and where, and to write one sentence of their own. The key on page 3 gives every answer. It follows England National Curriculum grammar for Years 3 and 4.

What's inside this worksheet

Find the Adverb and Verb

A box defines an adverb, then ten sentences such as We will leave soon, Yesterday we went swimming and Put your coat here. Pupils underline the adverb and circle the verb in each.

Sort the Adverbs

Three questions ask which adverbs from page 1 tell you how, when and where, with three writing lines each. A fourth question asks for one sentence with a how adverb.

Answers

The key marks the verb and adverb in all ten sentences and lists the sorted words. It accepts will leave or leave for sentence 2, and went or went swimming for sentence 5.

How teachers use it

Starter

Read the ten sentences aloud and ask pupils to say the verb before they circle it. Stop on sentence 7, Put your coat here, because the verb comes first.

Peer check

Pupils swap sheets and check each other's page 2 against the sentences. Hand out the key only for the answers they disagree on.

Fast finishers

Ask them to change the adverb in sentence 3 from where to how, so The children played outside becomes a sentence that says how they played.
