Transport Inventions Matching

Year 2 HistoryTransport Through History3 pages

About this worksheet

Six inventions, from the wheel to the Wright Flyer aeroplane, appear on this two-task Year 2 history worksheet. On page 1, pupils join four names (Viking Longship, Penny Farthing, Steam Locomotive and Early Biplane) to pictures set in a different order. On page 2, they write a letter beside each of six inventions to show how it changed travel, such as oars and a square sail for the longship. A short writing task then asks how one invention made journeys better at the time. The sheet fits KS1 history in the England National Curriculum, and an answer page gives both sets of matches and a model sentence.

Curriculum objectives covered

Events beyond living memory

โ€œEvents beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally [for example, the Great Fire of London, the first aeroplane flight or events commemorated through festivals or anniversaries]โ€

Statement F on page 2 describes the Wright Flyer carrying a pilot through the sky for the first time, which is the first aeroplane flight named here. The other five inventions are also beyond living memory.

What's inside this worksheet

Picture matching

Pupils draw lines from four transport names to four pictures. The Viking Longship heads the list but its picture is third, so pupils have to look at every picture.

How it changed travel

Pupils write letters A to F beside The Wheel, Viking Longship, Steam Locomotive, Penny Farthing, First Motor Car and Wright Flyer Aeroplane. The wheel is done for them as C.

Writing task

Pupils choose one invention and explain on four lines how it made journeys better for people at the time.

Answers

Picture matches 1-3, 2-4, 3-2 and 4-1, letters 1-C, 2-E, 3-B, 4-A, 5-D, 6-F, and a model answer comparing the steam locomotive with a horse-drawn carriage.

How teachers use it

Oldest first

After the matching, ask pupils to put the six inventions on page 2 in time order. The wheel and the longship usually start an argument worth having.

Clue words

Point out the clue words in each description, such as 'Victorian roads' in A and 'petrol engine' in D and F. Pupils can then tell the motor car and the aeroplane apart.

Then and now

For the writing task, ask pupils to compare their chosen invention with how they came to school this morning.
