This 2nd grade science cloze tells the story of a child packing for a hiking trip, one material at a time. Students fill ten gaps from a bank of twelve property words, such as waterproof, absorbent, and flexible, so two words are left over. A Your Turn question asks for one new sentence about a classroom material. The answer key gives the gap words in order, with model sentences. It supports NGSS 2-PS1-1 across three pages.

Each of the ten gaps matches an observable property to a material, for example absorbent for the towel and transparent for the water bottle. The Your Turn sentence applies the same words to classroom objects.
Students read about a plastic raincoat, leather boots, a clear water bottle, a pretzel rod, and a paper map. For each gap they pick a word from transparent, stiff, rough, strong, and eight more in the bank.
Students choose one property word they know well and write their own sentence about an object in the classroom, such as a window or a desk.
After handling materials
The gap words land better once students have touched a towel, a raincoat, and a piece of leather. Pass a few round before the reading.

Pairs read the passage aloud and agree on each word before they write. Bumpy and heavy are the two spare words, so listen for pairs who try to force them in.
