How Seeds Travel

2nd Grade SciencePlant Life Cycle3 pages

About this worksheet

Six seed pictures and a three-column chart make up the first page of this 3-page 2nd grade sheet. Students write a dandelion seed, a maple seed with wings, a coconut, a water lily seed, a burdock burr or an acorn carried by a squirrel under WIND, WATER or ANIMALS. Page 2 asks them to design and label a seed that could travel by wind. It touches NGSS 2-LS2-2, and page 3 has the sorted chart and what to look for in the drawings.

What's inside this worksheet

Sort the Seeds

Six picture cards above a chart with four dotted lines under each heading. Students write each seed name under wind, water or animals.

Design a Flying Seed

A single drawing box. Students draw a seed that could travel by wind and label the part that helps it fly.

Answers

Dandelion and maple under wind, coconut and water lily under water, burr and acorn under animals, and what a good drawing includes, such as wings, fluff or a parachute.

How teachers use it

Burr on a sleeve

Press a real burr or a hook-and-loop strip against a sleeve before students sort. The burdock card then makes sense at once.

Drop test

Drop a maple seed or a paper helicopter from a chair and watch it spin. Students can add wings to their drawing on page 2.

The acorn argument

Expect arguments over the acorn, since a tree drops acorns too. Ask what the squirrel does that the tree alone does not.
