The weather reporter's closet is in a mess, and 1st grade students fix it by sorting 16 clothes and activities into winter, spring, summer, and fall. Items range from a heavy coat and a sled to rain boots, a beach ball, a pumpkin, and planting seeds. Some, such as sneakers and long pants, fit more than one season, and the answer key accepts both. Two questions then ask for the hardest item and one new idea for each season.

Group sort
Print the word bank on cards and let groups sort them on a table. The arguments over sneakers and sunglasses are worth listening to.
Grading tip
Accept any placement a student can explain. The key itself allows sunglasses in winter, because snow reflects bright sun.
