Lesson details

What is inside this counting and cardinality lesson?

This Kindergarten lesson helps students connect number names to real quantities. It moves from teacher modeling to short counting checks, then ends with a classroom counting task using real objects.

Learning outcome

Students count each object once, use the last number said as the total, and explain that the total stays the same when objects move.

Key learning points

  • Give one number name to each object while counting.
  • Touch or point to each object so it is not skipped or counted twice.
  • The last number said tells how many are in the whole group.
  • The total stays the same when the same objects are moved into a new order.
  • Each next number is one more than the number before it.

Lesson sequence

  • Start with numbers and quantities using a friendly visual prompt.
  • Model pointing to one item at a time and saying one number for each item.
  • Count a group and use the last number to name how many there are in all.
  • Move the same objects into a new order and check that the total has not changed.
  • Add one more object and connect the next number to one more.
  • Finish with students counting classroom items such as crayons, blocks, or buttons.

Practice activities

  • Touch and count apples while saying one number for each apple.
  • Count a group of ducks and name the last number as the total.
  • Compare five marbles in a line and in a circle.
  • Put the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 in order for a robot counting task.
  • Find ten classroom objects, count them, move them, and count them again.
