World War Two Timeline Ordering

Year 6 HistoryWorld War Two4 pages

About this worksheet

A timeline ordering task for Year 6 history on the Second World War, over four pages. Six event cards each have a picture, a short description and a date. They cover the declaration of war, Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain, the Blitz, D-Day and VE Day. Pupils number the events from 1 to 6, then copy the letter, date and name of each into a chronological table. A final question asks why the Battle of Britain was a turning point and what might have happened if the RAF had lost. The answer key gives the order and a model answer. It follows the England National Curriculum.

Curriculum objectives covered

British history beyond 1066

โ€œA study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils' chronological knowledge beyond 1066โ€

The sheet puts six key events from 1939 to 1945 in order. It gives pupils a run of dates within one theme rather than a long sweep of British history.

What's inside this worksheet

World War Two: Timeline Ordering

Six event cards, A to F, each with an order box, such as the Evacuation of Dunkirk with over 338,000 soldiers rescued and the Blitz from September 1940.

Complete the Chronological Timeline

A six-row table where pupils write the event letter, date and name from earliest to latest.

Significant Turning Point: The Battle of Britain

One extended question on why the battle mattered and what might have happened if the RAF had lost.

How teachers use it

Close dates

The Battle of Britain (July to October 1940) and the Blitz (from September 1940) overlap. Use them to show that events on a timeline can run at the same time.

Card sort

Cut out the six cards and let groups order them on the table before anyone writes.

Family sources

Ask pupils to find out if their family has any letters or photos from 1939 to 1945, and pin copies beside the matching card.
