Comparing Mammal and Amphibian Life Cycles Venn

Year 5 ScienceLiving Things and Their Habitats3 pages

About this worksheet

A conservation team's guide sets up this three-page Year 5 life cycle sort. Pupils place fifteen features into a three-column table: Mammals Only, Both Mammals and Amphibians, and Amphibians Only. The middle column does the job of the overlap in a Venn diagram, and each column takes five features. Features include undergo metamorphosis, drink mother's milk and start life as a fertilised egg. Two reflection questions ask which feature was hardest and for one new feature per column. The answer key gives the sort and admits that some amphibians care for their young. It follows the England National Curriculum for living things and their habitats.

What's inside this worksheet

Life Cycles: Mammals and Amphibians

A short task set by a wildlife conservation team.

Field Notes: Life-Cycle Features

Fifteen features, such as lay jelly-covered eggs in water, grow inside mother's womb and develop gills at larval stage.

Classification Table

Three columns in place of a Venn diagram: Mammals Only, Both Mammals and Amphibians, and Amphibians Only. The headings are on page 1 and the rows on page 2.

Reflection and Reasoning

Pupils explain their hardest choice with evidence, then add one new feature to each column.

How teachers use it

Frogspawn season

Save it for spring, when there is frogspawn in the school pond, so pupils see the jelly-covered eggs for real.

Hoops on the floor

Lay two overlapping PE hoops on the floor and let groups place feature cards in them before they fill the table.

Parental care

Tell pupils that some frogs and toads guard their eggs. It turns Care for newborn young into a good card to argue over.
