Earth, Sun and Moon Knowledge Check

Year 5 ScienceEarth and Space5 pages

About this worksheet

The Earth, Sun and Moon knowledge check for Year 5 has ten questions over five pages, with an answer key. Pupils start with true or false statements on shape and size, then order the three bodies by size. An orbit diagram labelled A and B, and three gap sentences, cover how long each orbit and spin takes. A second diagram shows Side X of the Earth in sunlight and Side Y in darkness. The last questions ask pupils to explain the Sun's path, noon in London and midnight in Sydney, and why Leo is wrong. It covers four Earth and space objectives from the England National Curriculum.

Curriculum objectives covered

Earth and space

โ€œDescribe the Sun, Earth and Moon as approximately spherical bodiesโ€

Question 1 says the three bodies are roughly spherical, and question 2 orders them by size.

Earth and space

โ€œDescribe the movement of the Earth, and other planets, relative to the Sun in the solar systemโ€

Label A and the first gap in question 4. Other planets are not covered.

Earth and space

โ€œDescribe the movement of the Moon relative to the Earthโ€

Label B and the second gap in question 4, where the key accepts 27 to 29 days.

Earth and space

โ€œUse the idea of the Earth's rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky.โ€

Questions 6 to 10 all use the Earth's rotation, from Side X and Side Y to the Sun's path across the sky.

What's inside this worksheet

Section 1: Shapes and Sizes

Three true or false statements, including 'The Moon is larger than the Earth.', and the three bodies in size order from the smallest.

Section 2: Movements in Space

Pupils name orbits A and B on a diagram, fill in how long an orbit of the Sun, an orbit of the Earth and one spin take, and choose rotating from four words.

Section 3: Day and Night

A diagram of sunlight falling on Side X. Pupils say which side has daytime, explain the dark side, and pick the cause of day and night from four options.

Section 4: Applying Your Understanding

Written answers on the Sun rising in the east and setting in the west, London and Sydney, and two facts to correct Leo, with rotate, axis and apparent movement in a vocabulary box.

How teachers use it

Torch and globe

Shine a torch on a globe for Section 3 and turn it slowly, so pupils watch London move from the light side to the dark side.

Leo's claim

Read Leo's statement aloud before question 10 and take a quick class vote on it first.

Shadow stick

Pair question 8 with a shadow stick in the playground, marked three times in one day.
