Stages of Human Development Guided Notes

Year 5 ScienceAnimals Including Humans4 pages

About this worksheet

Year 5 pupils fill guided notes on how humans develop, in four stages over four pages. Pupils fill gaps from fertilisation, the foetus and the placenta, through infancy and milk teeth, to puberty, adulthood and old age. Each stage after the first ends with an open note. These cover early childhood milestones, why sleep and food matter in puberty, and two ways to stay healthy in later life. There is no word bank. The answer key gives every missing word and a model answer for each open note. It follows the England National Curriculum.

How teachers use it

RSE timing

Stage 3 mentions periods, breast development and a deeper voice. Check it against your school's RSE plan before you teach it.

Photo timeline

Ask staff for photos of themselves as babies, children and adults, and peg them along a line labelled with the four stages.

No word bank

The sheet has no word bank, so write key words such as placenta, hormones and gestation on the board for pupils who need them.
