Year 2 MathsAddition and Subtraction4 pages

About this worksheet

Six subtraction word problems for Year 2 pupils who need more support, with numbers up to 50. Each problem sits beside a picture to count or cross out and a bar model, and pupils fill in a ___ - ___ = ___ number sentence. Sam gives away 5 of his 16 stickers, and a class eats 7 of 19 apples. Then 12 of 25 children get off a bus. The last part has 46 tennis balls taken in two goes and a ribbon question where Aisha says 30 cm is left from 50 cm. The answers give a number sentence and a mental method for each.

What's inside this worksheet

At School

Two problems with every object drawn: 16 stars for Sam's stickers and 19 apples in the fruit basket. Each bar model shows the whole and the part taken away.

On the Move

Twenty-five faces for the children on the school bus, then a base 10 picture of 38 for Maya's water. The second bar model leaves the whole blank for pupils to fill.

Thinking Deeper

Coach Dan's bag of 46 tennis balls loses 20 and then 4 more. After that, pupils decide whether Aisha is right about her ribbon and explain on three lines.

Answers

Each answer with its bar model, number sentence and one way to work it out, such as 25 - 10 = 15, then 15 - 2 = 13.

How teachers use it

Small group with an adult

Read each problem aloud and let pupils cross out the stickers or apples one at a time. The bar model then becomes a record of what they just did.

Is Aisha right

Use question 6 for a short class discussion. Pupils show 50 cm as five tens, take three away, then decide if 30 cm can be left.

Fading the pictures

Once pupils manage questions 1 to 3 with the pictures, cover the base 10 for question 5 with a sticky note. See if the bar model alone is enough.
