Sorting Sentence Types

Year 2 EnglishGrammar and Punctuation3 pages

About this worksheet

The Grammar Gremlins have mixed up the signs at the Sentence Museum. Year 2 pupils sort 12 sentences into four display rooms: Statement, Question, Command and Exclamation. Three clues help, including a warning that some sentences start with How or What but are really questions. Two follow-up questions ask which sentence was trickiest and ask pupils to write their own command and exclamation. The answer key sorts all 12. Three pages, matched to the England National Curriculum grammar and punctuation objectives.

What's inside this worksheet

The Great Sentence Sort

Twelve sentences to sort into four columns. 'Pass me the blue pencil.' is a command, and 'What is in the box?' starts like an exclamation but is a question.

Think About It

Pupils name the trickiest sentence and write a new command and a new exclamation for the museum.

How teachers use it

Hoop sort

Print the sentences on card and let groups sort them into four hoops on the carpet.

Misconception check

Watch for pupils who put 'How did you do that?' in the Exclamation room. It shows they sort by the first word only.

Extension

Pupils who finish can write a new sign for the Question and Statement rooms too.
